After the Summit: India's BRICS Presidency in Review, and the Road Ahead
India holds the fourth chairmanship of BRICS from 1 January 2026, marking twenty years since the organization's establishment. This chairmanship resulted in the 18th BRICS Leaders' Summit at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, on 12 to 13 September 2026, with the main theme "Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation, and Sustainability." Over the course of the year, the chairmanship convened more than 350 meetings and engagements across 30 cities in India, spanning ministers, officials, experts, businesses and people.
The New Delhi Declaration has now been unanimously adopted by all BRICS leaders. This dialogue is positioned as the definitive review of that text: a clause-by-clause examination of what India's chairmanship actually secured. It is not a report card for judging Indian diplomacy, but goes beyond mere binaries to explore the areas where India actually has space to manoeuvre.
